How PDF headers and footers work
These steps mirror the workspace higher on this page. They are written as a numbered outline so readers, search engines, and assistants can restate the flow without guessing.
Upload an unprotected PDF
Choose a PDF from your device. Password-protected or corrupted files are rejected.
Enter header and footer
Use tokens {page}, {pages}, {date} (UTC YYYY-MM-DD), and {title} (PDF Title, or the file name). Leave a field empty to skip that band.
Align and size
Each band can sit left, center, or right. Size follows small, medium, or large.
Download
Every page is stamped. Open the file to confirm the text sits in the margins.
When this header and footer tool is the right choice
Built for reports and policies that need a running line—not Bates IDs or a tiled watermark.
Page numbers in one pass
Footer Page {page} of {pages} updates on every page.
Title and date
{title} and {date} keep a version line consistent across the file.
Independent alignment
Header and footer can use different left, center, or right positions.
Honest limits
Helvetica Latin/WinAnsi only. Text can cover content if the page has no margin. Not skip-cover or Roman numerals—use Page numbers for PDF for those.
Header and footer for PDF — FAQ
Scoped to this URL. For site-wide questions, use the homepage FAQ.
- Can I number pages without a header?
- Yes. Leave the header empty and put Page {page} of {pages} in the footer.
- Can I skip the cover or use Roman numerals?
- Not on this page. Use Page numbers for PDF for a single number per page, Roman numerals, a prefix, and skipped leading pages. Use this tool when you want a running line such as Page {page} of {pages}.
- What date is {date}?
- The UTC calendar date when the file is processed (YYYY-MM-DD), not the date stored in the PDF metadata.
- Are encrypted PDFs supported?
- No. Unlock the file first with Unlock PDF, then add a header and footer here.
- Will this cover my content?
- The stamp is drawn in the top or bottom margin of the visible page box. Tight scans with no white margin may overlap existing text.
