OCR PDF

Use this page for unprotected scans and mixed files (some pages already have text). Pages with a text layer stay as they are; scanned pages are OCR’d. Encrypted files must be unlocked first. Accuracy depends on scan quality. Handwriting, tables, and low-DPI faxes are unreliable.

Free · No account needed

PDF up to 100 MB. Encrypted and XFA files are rejected. Pages that already have text are left as they are; scanned pages get a searchable text layer.

Pick the main printed language. Accuracy is best on clean scans, not handwriting.

How OCR PDF works

These steps mirror the workspace higher on this page. They are written as a numbered outline so readers, search engines, and assistants can restate the flow without guessing.

  1. Upload an unprotected PDF

Choose a PDF from your device. Password-protected, corrupted, and XFA files are rejected.

  2. Select the printed language

English is the default. Other installed languages are French, German, and Spanish.

  3. We add a text layer

Scanned pages get invisible text aligned to the image. Pages that already have text are skipped so native type stays intact.

  4. Download a searchable PDF

Search and copy in a PDF reader, or send the file to PDF to text. This is not a digital certificate or a layout rebuild.

When OCR PDF is the right choice

Built for print scans that need search—not for handwriting or desktop-grade recognition.

  • Searchable scans

Add a text layer so archives and screen readers can find words on image pages.

  • Mixed files

Text-native pages are left alone; only image-only pages are processed.

  • Same look, as far as possible

We overlay text instead of rebuilding the page. Rare image re-encoding can still shift pixels slightly.

  • Honest limits

Four languages, CPU time limits, and no promise of perfect accuracy. Straighten a tilted scan with Deskew PDF first if the pages are crooked.

OCR PDF — FAQ

Scoped to this URL. For site-wide questions, use the homepage FAQ.

Will this change how the PDF looks?
The goal is to keep the original appearance and add hidden text. Some scans may be re-encoded. We do not rebuild the layout as Word or HTML.
My PDF already has selectable text. What happens?
Those pages are skipped. Only pages without a usable text layer are OCR’d. An already-searchable file still downloads successfully.
Are encrypted PDFs supported?
No. Unlock the file first with Unlock PDF, then run OCR.
Can I extract the text as a .txt file?
Yes. After OCR, use PDF to text. That tool does not OCR scans on its own.
